Ask Dale

Should the assistant call all the stalling?

Mike, an official, asked: Should the assistant official have total responsibility for calling stalling? The assistant sees what the lead can't.

My answer: I like dividing responsibilities, but most officials don't yet truly understand how to work as a pair, so my first priority is good two-man mechanics. And if my partner calls stalling, the coach is still yelling at me. My solution: headsets, like college. Only the whistle makes the call, but communication is 100% better. San Diego bought 8 sets this year.

George Dixon joined me to break down stalling on top and bottom with real match clips.

  • Watch both wrestlers for repeated failure to improve position. (5-24-1)

Official's Tip

Professionalism starts before the first whistle

Coaches size you up before your first whistle, so look the part: striped or gray pinstripe knit shirt, black trousers, belt, socks and shoes, a black whistle, the disk, red band left wrist, green right. (3-1-1)

Habit: Pack the night before from a checklist, then do a mirror check.
